Note how they bridge from "defend Obama's plan" to "expand Obama's plan"
and also push the idea of "debt-free college." Add this to the minimum
program...

Subject: SIGN THE PETITION: Support Obama's free college plan
To: Robert Naiman <[email protected]>

 Robert --

*College should be free.

And, in a breakthrough development, *President Obama just took a
game-changing first step toward achieving this momentous vision* with the
free community college plan he boldly unveiled on Friday. Almost
immediately, Republicans went on the attack.

Of course, in places like Germany and Scotland, college is already free. *It
used to be free in many U.S. states, including California.* Back then, free
college gave a big financial boost to a growing middle class and provided
many families with a better income.

But right-wing budget cuts in recent decades have made college unaffordable
-- unless students take out tens of thousands of dollars in loans. These
loans are crushing people young and old, making it harder to start a family
and make a living.

*If Democrats are going to win in 2016, they need to propose bold solutions
to the economic problems facing most Americans.* President Obama's free
community college plan does exactly that and changes the conversation about
college affordability. Now it's time for Democrats to expand the fight to
making all public universities free -- and eliminating the existing student
loan debt that is hurting so many families.

That's why Democracy for America is teaming up with our friends at the
*Progressive
Change Campaign Committee* and *Daily Kos* to turn this moment into a
movement.

*To build momentum before President Obama's State of the Union speech, we
need your support now. Sign our petition urging Democrats to stand strong
against Republicans in the battle over debt-free college.

After you sign, we'll share the following petition language with President
Obama and Democratic leaders. This is what it says:

*"PETITION: We support free community college as a first step toward
debt-free college at all public institutions of higher learning. This is
the kind of big idea that Americans are crying out for and need to see more
of from Democrats. If you fight, we will fight alongside you."*

Making all public colleges free, and freeing Americans from the crushing
burden of existing student loan debt, would be one of the greatest forms of
economic stimulus imaginable.

Debt-free college would enable Americans young and old to create innovative
new ideas, start new businesses, and focus on making our country more
progressive. It would also allow more people to get married, start a
family, and live the American Dream that the high cost of college and debt
denies to so many people.

*President Obama's bold plan for free community college should change the
way Democrats talk about college affordability. It should be the first step
toward truly debt-free college, and pave the way for getting rid of
existing student loan debt as well. But that won't happen unless Democrats
stand up to Republican attacks on debt-free college.*

*This is urgent. Please sign our debt-free college petition to President
Obama and Democratic leaders -- and pass this on to your friends ASAP.

Thank you for standing up for debt-free college at this critical moment.
