China with robots. The U.S. caught up with Britain and surpassed it in
the nineteenth century; then another half century of industrialization
beckoned. Vast areas are now industrializing, but the old connection
with mass prosperity is largely broken. Two or three decades from now,
China will likely arrive at the same impasse as the U.S. – an economy in
which technology advances but economic, social, and cultural life
regresses."
