" peaceful, non-violent protest and the observance of the rule of law"
This is a bundle of contradictions. The phrase "non-violent protest" is empty; it is meaningful only when expanded to "non-violent civil disobedience": And that is in flat contradiction to " observance of the rule of law." The last phrase is _the_ foundation for violent suppression of all protest. Check out what the Mayor of Baltimore has been saying. Leftist action -- particularly in building a new union movement, can have non-violent disobedience at its core but it _cannot_ confine itself to the peaceful and the legal. See the new book on unions by Aronowitz. Practically _all_ of the tactics that built the CIO were or have become illegal: building occupations; mass pickets; sympathy strikes.
