One commentary worth reading opens, "They were young, attractive,
well-educated, and the darlings of the non-Communist left (and even some
Communists!). The leaders of the Greek party, SYRIZA, promised the Greek
people an escape from the jaws of the European Central Bank, the
International Monetary Fund, and the European Commission."

Indeed, Syriza's Thessaloniki program of September 2014 (
http://www.syriza.gr/article/SYRIZA---THE-THESSALONIKI-PROGRAMME.html )
promised, "We will fight and secure a socially viable solution to
Greece's debt problem so that our country is able to pay off the
remaining debt from the creation of new wealth and not from primary
surpluses, which deprive society of income. ... We assume responsibility
and are accordingly committed to the Greek people for a National
Reconstruction Plan that will replace the Memorandum as early as our
first days in power, before and regardless of the negotiation outcome."

Lefties loved it. "If this is 'reformism', I am all for it." (
