The unreflecting would have it that England became capitalist because of "the place of England within an ensemble of class relations existing inter-societally vis-a-vis the Mongols, the Ottomans, the Chinese and the Indians. As a 'backward' country on their periphery, England was able to leapfrog over them through a series of policies that exploited its geographical position, its military superiority, its access to New World bullion and other factors." -- Except that feudalism was a corpse in England by the time of these factors (except of course the geographic one, which is so unchanging that it explains nothing).
The question is what broke feudalism in England; see early Rodney Hilton studies for some answers. But the unreflecting talk as though the Occupy movement happened several years ago because Bernie Sanders ran for president in 2016. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
