Game theory always seemed like a rather sterile exericize in the economics literature, but micro economists seem to like it. Michael Perelman <<<<<>>>>> pretty sterile in international relationsl... not really an ir person but i understand 'advantages' to using game theory as simplfication of complex choices that states make, forces folks to examine assumptions systematically, helps clarify choices available, offers possibilities that might not otherwise be considered, offers chance to see where other states may stand... but gt assumptions - unitary state, unitary state acting rationally, giving arbitrary payoffs in advance, game occurs one time - make for significant limitations... so game theory premits simplicity - choices seen as interdependent, determined largely by actions of others - but is that how state decisions are made... moreover, given what is known about foreign-policy decisionmaking, is notion of unitary state actor valid... michael hoover -------------------------------------------------------------- Please Note: Due to Florida's very broad public records law, most written communications to or from College employees regarding College business are public records, available to the public and media upon request.
