Ann's point about Churchill's "racial composition" is right on target. I find
it
interesting that very little has been said here about the content of
Churchill's writings.
His tone is quite angry, but his anger is understandable. He writes about a
Holocaust in a
world that is supposed to have only a single Holocaust. He challenges the
hypocrisy of the
US government at a time when the government makes a claim to be the gold
standard of
morality. So he makes a wonderful target, especially because he can be
personally
abrasive. Very few academics will really stand up for Churchill. A precedent
will be set,
empowering others to go after those who voice unpopular views.

I guess the problem is that we really do not have an institutional
infrastructure on the
left to effectively defend ourselves at this time. My instinct is that the
right wing is
going to overreach itself for a shortly. Our disarray will be very costly if
we let that
opportunity slip by.
