The North Vietnamese had several advantages. They were culturally more homogeneous and probably had a longer concrete political memory. They had been engaged in struggles before the days of Kennedy and Johnson. Their terrain allowed them to operate with larger groupings.
None of us can pretend to really understand the Iraqi insurgents, except for their resentment of the occupiers. I wonder how many of us would be able to muster the courage of the Vietnamese or Iraqi insurgents.
