Maybe, but it would not be independent of the social
attitudes towards death and dyeing. In otherwords
scarcity would still be socially determined.

Good point. I clearly over stated my claim.

Well, Marx does talk about a concept in general and
that concept as modified by the specific historic
system. Clearly I need to think more about this.
