The principle is that (a) no nation in the Mideast shall have the power
to defeat Israel and (b) Israel shall have the power to defeat any
nation in the mideast.

The possession of even one nuclear weapon (with delivery system) by any
other mideast power would mean that second of these needs would become
problematic. Since Israel could no longer use nuclear weapons (and no
other nation _would_ use nuclear weapons), the Mideast would become, de
facto, a nuclear-free zone. Hence, while Israel might continue to be
protected against defeat ([a] above) by both by its own (non-nuclear)
military power and by u.s. protection, it would no longer be guaranteed
the capacity to defeat any other nation. Hence the scope and limits of
its power, for the first time in nearly 60 years, would become
negotiable.

Peace would be guaranteed in the Mideast, and Israel cannot survive a
lengthy period of peace. Hence the necessity (both for Israel and for
u.s. imperial power) to deny nuclear weapons to any other state in the
Mideast.
