In Kearney, Missouri they still hold their Jesse James Festival every year - paid for partly with municipal funds - and the official history of the town on the Web still rails against the cruelty of "the Federals." A group of citizens gives tours at the nonprofit Jesse James Farm Museum, and raises money to preserve the hallowed ground.
Historic revisionism, the joke that gets better (but no less false) with time:
Monterey & Salinas California worship John Steinbeck's life. Doc Rickett's lab boat at the entrance to Monterey's fisherman's wharf is a big draw, along with a nightclub named in his honor... Doc Rickett's Lab. The Steinbeck museum on Lighthouse Avenue is a favorite with tourists. 70+- years ago, the fine folks of Monterey county would have most likely strung John Steinbeck up. Currently, Santa Cruz want's to keep itself "Weird", aptly promoted by the self-same elements that are eager to chase every vestige of "weird" & "counter-culture" away. ...and the laughs keep on coming.
