[PEN-L] Bremmer on Iraq's industry

The embargo on Iraq did wonders for industrialisation in the countries surrounding Iraq. A not up to the standard syrian for inst., commodity had a market in commodity starved Iraq under the embargo of 1990-2002. Agriculture inside Iraq, not needing too many intermediate imported inputs picked up tremendously during the embargo, Bremmer in turn as soon as he was appointed viceroy in the new territory, brought down all tariffs on industrial goods to 5% and disallowed the use of agricultural seeds that were the intellectual property of western conglomerates. Apart from the more pervaisive effect of the war, these measures also contributed in some capacity to bringing down completely both industrial and agricultural production inside iraq.
