Could it be that Che is a bigger icon than Fidel, not because of the
management powers of the Cuban people but because the CIA was
successful in assassinating him (and not Fidel), and because American
and other arm-chair revolutionaries prefer him on their tee-shirts?

Yes, death at an early age preserved Che's glamour even in a
capitalist eye.  But it's the Cuban leadership who decided whose face
should be on posters, murals, etc. in the island itself.  A shrewed
decision, imho.
