Last year, the Prudhoe bay operators petitioned the feds and Alaska to
change the requirement that the permafrost on the tundra be a certain
thickness before equipment is moved to avoid environmental damage.

They are having a problem... due to global warming, the tundra isn't
staying frozen to the regulated depth long enough for the drilling
operations to move equipment around.

I never saw the results of their efforts in print, but if they failed,
it would just be added incentive to shut the operation down anyway,
despite the whistle...
