Lieberman concedes defeat in primary battle to Lamont

Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. — Senator Joe Lieberman failed in his bid for a fourth term Tuesday; succumbing to a tough primary challenge and payback from his own party for supporting the Iraq war.

In his concession, Mr. Lieberman vowed to petition his way onto the November ballot as an independent, a nightmare scenario to state Democrats which could almost certainly toss the race to the Republican's in this fall's tightly contested battle wrest control of Congress from the GOP.

"As I see it, in this campaign we just finished the first half and the Lamont team is ahead. But, in the second half, our team, Team Connecticut, is going to surge forward to victory in November," Mr. Lieberman said late Tuesday.

Mr. Lieberman was losing with 48 per cent, or 134,026 votes, to Lamont's 51 per cent, or 144,005 votes, with 98 per cent of precincts reporting.
