There you go again. Dismissing minstrel shows out of hand without
having done the research. ;-) Seriously, though, I happen to be
researching the minstrel show at the moment as I think that they
provide an important clue as to what is pathological and what is
potentially redemptive in American culture.

Imho "American culture" *is* a minstrel show displaying ...sanitized,
for want of another word, original culture back *to* the originating
society in it's own domain (assuming current existence of the original
society).
I've seen that stated elsewhere, more eloquently, perhaps it was T.

I think it's part of what drives islamic fundamentalism's hostility to
...western... culture. The Iranians see a generation or so of their
people come back from 'refuge' and education in the west, and they act
like "pod people". They look, act, and think Iranian, but 'something'
has changed, and it is assuredly noted by the prevailing religious and
spiritual leaders.
