The Supreme Court held that it was a violation of federal civil rights laws for
an employer to refuse employment to pregnant women for a job that involved lead
exposure based upon the perceived risk to the fetus. See, International
Unions, United Automobile, Aerospace & Agricultural Implement Workers of
America, UAW v. Johnson Controls, Inc., 499 U.S. 187 [1991]. The Catholic
Church, the Concerned Women of American and other conservative groups supported
the employer. The ACLU, NAACP and other groups opposed the employer policy.
Interestingly, Ken Starr, as solicitor general, submitted a brief against the
employer policy.
