The Supreme Court held that it was a violation of federal civil rights laws for an employer to refuse employment to pregnant women for a job that involved lead exposure based upon the perceived risk to the fetus. See, International Unions, United Automobile, Aerospace & Agricultural Implement Workers of America, UAW v. Johnson Controls, Inc., 499 U.S. 187 [1991]. The Catholic Church, the Concerned Women of American and other conservative groups supported the employer. The ACLU, NAACP and other groups opposed the employer policy. Interestingly, Ken Starr, as solicitor general, submitted a brief against the employer policy. David Shemano
