There is never going to be a Nato victory in Afghanistan
The military option is going nowhere. The way forward is to emulate
Pakistan by withdrawing troops and making deals

"we are in a Muslim country and Muslims' views of foreigners in their
country are quite clear".
.
It's always been "quite clear".
So when did the power structure start caring what was clear? Job #1 is
obfuscation.
Here's what happens: The U.S. will fall back from Iraq to Afghanistan
shortly, or start using it as an active rearguard area and back NATOs
play there with whatever "optempo" they can muster.
We "need" the natural resources, and we "need" them enough to kill for
them for a long, long time. Just like they have killed invaders for a
long, long time.
Unfortunately, in the economy of killing, the aggregate "Cost of
Killing" to their economy is much lower than ours... We lose anyway.
Repeat frequently for best effect: Punji sitcks, Tiger traps, Slippers
made from the tires of stolen humvees... WWII vintage weapons. Invader
goes away.
