Then there's J. Alfred Prufrock. Carrol* *Also a former "Jr." Apparently my grandmother didn't know that the standard way of spelling the masculine form of the name was a double LL as well as a double RR. On one list a poster is still spelling my name "Carroll" after almost 10 years! It's a good example of the tendency even of the bright and observant to see what they expect to see.
