Well, we have empirical evidence that worker controlled firms are often
more efficient than capitalist ones. As for democratic planning, the only
study of this on anything but a micro level that I know of is Jimo county
in China during the GPCR. I made a post to this list earlier, it is linked

I would also say that heirarchal planning (such as in South Korea or more
controversially, Maoist China) often works as well as or better than
markets. Would the democratic nature of planning under (an idealized)
socialism be make it ineffective?
