There's doesn't need to be a socioeconomic catastrophe in order to grab the attention of qualified voters of politicize large numbers of people. Certainly, that is not what brought people to the polls in 2006. There are surely lots of things that combine to create this kind of response.
And it's not permanent because the process is, as Carroll pointed out, quite fluid. ML
