We should add that James Baker and Robert Gates are old hands at striking
deals with the bazaari bourgeoisie, as obvious from Contragate. I have no
doubt, btw, that Democrats like Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton see eye to
eye with them.
In the Contragate, all Tehran had to do was to pay for weapons that it
needed for the Iran-Iraq War. Baker, Gates, et al. are engaged in
wishful thinking if Tehran or Damascus or anyone can do much in Iraq
that is in Washington's interest (supposing that Washington knows what
its best interests in Iraq are, which is far from clear either). Look
at Afghanistan. Washington has enjoyed many nations' cooperation
there, including Iran's, Russia's, and Pakistan's, and yet it is the
Taliban, not Washington, that is gaining ground there.
