Iran's farce of a "conference" on the Holocaust is a way of underlining
its government's complete rejection of a two state solution and of a
Zionist state in the Middle East. Iran's leaders support a maximalist
Hamas vision of a fundamentalist Muslim Palestinian state in all of
historical Palestine, which requires the dissolution of the Israeli
state. Since Israelis tend to justify their state project with reference
to the Holocaust, the Ahmadinejad faction in Iran is replying with
Holocaust denial as a counter to this argument. Note that other
prominent Iranians, such as former President Mohammad Khatami, accept
the Holocaust and have lambasted Ahmadinejad for questioning it.

Juan Cole is of course correct, and it is also a way of issuing an
industrial-strength, nay enriched-uranium-strength, fuck-you to all
those who think, in Iran and the West, that Iran should help America
manage Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestine without America withdrawing its
troops from Iraq, Israel ending its occupation, America ceasing to
back the March 14 coalition in Lebanon, etc.
BUT,
The Iranian government should have been able to say all that WITHOUT
hosting a conference of WESTERN, RACIST, HOLOCAUST DENIERS like DAVID
DUKE et al., which HARMS IRAN, THE PALESTINIANS, AND ALL OTHER PEOPLES
IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
I say this as a committed friend of the Iranian and Palestinian
peoples. Unfortunately, no faction of the Iranian government will
ever listen to what leftists in the West say. Statesmen of the NAM
like Chavez and Raul Castro, Putin, Hu, etc., as well as Palestinian
leaders, must tell them, for the Iranian power elite can't ignore
them, though they can ignore the Western leftists, the Western media,
etc.
