In 1901 William Knox D'Arcy, an Australian oil explorer, obtained from
the shah of Persia the sole right to most of the Persian oil fields for
60 years; he founded the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, in which both
Zaharoff and the British government later took an interest and which
Zaharoff used to help penetrate the French oil market.
