(In the name of God the Most Glorious Mr D'Arcy
is empowered to scratch through the sub-soil of Persia
until fifty years from this date...)
                Canto XXXVIII
>From _A Companion to the Cantos_:

In 1901 William Knox D'Arcy, an Australian oil explorer, obtained from
the shah of Persia the sole right to most of the Persian oil fields for
60 years; he founded the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, in which both
Zaharoff and the British government later took an interest and which
Zaharoff used to help penetrate the French oil market.

I suppose 1901 is as good a date as any for the beginning of the current
Middle-East War.

P.S. Pound used a very bad theory to bring into rather interesting
coherence a rather large historical variety.
