If private property were abolished...

There's a couple of caveats, but abolishing private property would be
a good start. ;'>

Announcing our new report: HOMELESS PEOPLE COUNT - Vacant Property in Manhattan

Dear Friends and Members,

Picture the Homeless is excited to announce the release of our timely
and compelling new report, Homeless People Count, documenting the
results of the historic Vacant Building & Lot Count that we developed
and executed last year in collaboration with the office of Manhattan
Borough President Scott Stringer.

Over 100 volunteers joined us in going block-by-block over every
square inch of Manhattan--since HPD and the Mayor refused to do a
count, maintaining that empty buildings are no longer a problem. The
results of our count are clear evidence to the contrary. Our report
conclusively shows that there are enough potential apartments in
vacant buildings and lots IN MANHATTAN ALONE to house every single
homeless person in the shelters and on the streets of THE ENTIRE CITY.

It's on our website, here: http://www.picturethehomeless.org/count Or
you can click here to download the PDF directly:
http://www.picturethehomeless.org/files/pdf/Homeless_People_Count.pdf

At 4.5 MB it's a large document, but worth the slightly longer
download time when you see the stunning design and compelling visuals
(special thanks to Trinidad M. Pena of Impact Design Graphics (
www.impactdesigngraphics.com), who designed the report). And the hard
copy is even more impressive--email me back with your address, and I
will send you a copy.

NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

* Do you have a blog? Post a link to the report, with a little blurb
about why you think it's important.

* Are you a journalist, or does your organization have a newsletter?
Write a short piece about the report--or call us, and we'll write one!

* Email your elected officials a link to the report, and let them know
that you want something done about all these abandoned buildings all
over the city.

* SEND THE LINK TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND COMRADES WHO THINK THAT
HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT.

* Invite a leader of our Housing Campaign to come do a teach-in at
your organization or faith community, about abandoned buildings and
the solutions homeless people have developed.

* And of course, important work like this takes money. If you can mail
us a donation, or PayPal it to us, that would be a huge help.

We are confident that Homeless People Count proves the urgent need for
new laws and policies to stop landlords and the city from keeping
buildings empty. I hope you'll join us in making that happen.

If you have any questions or comments, or ideas about how to utilize
these findings in the fight for community development policies that
benefit all New Yorkers, please don't hesitate to email me back or
call me at 646-314-6423.

Sincerely,

Sam J. Miller Housing Campaign Organizer Picture the Homeless
