every year, BUSINESSWEEK magazine publishes data on CEO salaries vs.
production worker salaries (or something similar). Has anyone created
a time series of these data?

Jurriaan Bendien (not currently a pen-pal) suggested a useful source:

Carola Frydman and Raven E. Saks, 2006. Historical Trends in Executive
Compensation 1936-2003. Economic History Association meetings,
http://2006.ehameeting.com/schedule/pdfs/session_2c_frydman_and_saks.pdf

not only does their table 6 show the well-known surge in CEO pay since
1980 or so, but there's a widening gap between CEOs and other
officers.
