Jurriaan Bendien (not currently a pen-pal) suggested a useful source: Carola Frydman and Raven E. Saks, 2006. Historical Trends in Executive Compensation 1936-2003. Economic History Association meetings, http://2006.ehameeting.com/schedule/pdfs/session_2c_frydman_and_saks.pdf not only does their table 6 show the well-known surge in CEO pay since 1980 or so, but there's a widening gap between CEOs and other officers.
