I just sent this comment to Lou's blog In 1984, I spent some time with Clark when I spent a year at Stanford. He is very bright. His main focus is to prove that wealth and power are the result of the efficiency of markets; his dissatisfaction with my work was not surprising. Some of his work is far fetched, but he usually is very diligent in collecting data and using very up-to-date methods.
This particular effort seems a bit far fetched. I don't think that much factory work was taken up by middle class youth. England had their equivalent of Mexicans in nearby Ireland.
