     Lost in Transliteration: Nowruz/Norouz/Norooz/No-Ruz/ Nauruz?
By Mahasti Afshar

The correct spelling of the Persian word Nowruz/Noruz/Norooz, lit.
"New Day," is an old debate that resurfaced when the United
Nations named March 21, the "International Day of Nowruz" and
more recently, when the "Nowruz resolution" was introduced
into the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Lack of a
standardized transliteration of this celebrated word has elicited
questions and comments from many of our readers and members. Hence,
this brief note.

PAAIA NexGen Member Writes Nowruz Speech for Congressman Honda

March 22, 2010, Washington, D.C. -- Last Monday when Congressman
Michael Honda made a statement on the floor of the House of
Representatives regarding the Nowruz resolution, it meant a little
something extra to Iranian American Shirin Jamshidi. A PAAIA NexGen
member, Jamshidi is an intern for the Congressman and helped draft his
remarks for the occasion. A graduate of the University of California,
San Diego, Jamshidi began working in Congressman Honda's office at the
beginning of February this year.

Iranian American Swoops March Madness and Makes the Cover of
Sports Illustrated
Sarah Barbod, PAAIA Orange County Chapter Intern

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 - Just announced this morning, Ali
Farokhmanesh, a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, will be
featured on the March 29 cover of Sports Illustrated. Ali made college
basketball history on Saturday, interestingly the first day of spring,
with a three-point shot for the record books. With less than 50 seconds
left on the clock, no timeouts, and the haze of underdog #9 seed lure
creeping from all corners of the court, the 6'0"/190 lb. Guard
scored the game winning a three-point shot (watch) in a dramatic
playoff versus #1 seed University of Kansas. Thanks to Ali's shot, the
UNI Panthers have singled themselves out of 64 teams and are now on
their way to the next round of the NCAA tournament, the coveted Sweet
16.
