Summary:
David Guinness in conversation - loosely entitled 'Whatever Happened
To British Technology' - but along the way he explains how inequality
was built into the very structure of Eton where he was beaten with
the cane etc. but never really understood why. After Eton he joined
the Guards as an officer but couldn't understand why the Christian
maxim of 'loving your neighbour' meant, killing your neighbour in the
army. David's uncle was Sir John Slessor, Marshall of the Royal Air
Force, a cousin of his mother's was Lord Charles Portal of Hungerford
who was Marshal of the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain,
his godmother was the granddaughter of British Prime Minister in the
1830s and 1840s Sir Robert Peel, his Godfather Sir Charles Doughty
was a Tory MP. He then got a job in engineering working for the
Advanced Projets Department of Hawker Siddley Dynamics at Hatfield
designing the world's first laser and infra-red guided missile
guidance systems. He was 'headhunted' over to the US to work on the
space programme in the 1960s but found it terribly boring and went on
to do a business degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
David believes engineers have been chased out of Britain because they
are considered a threat to the Establishment and that making Britain
the centre for the development of tidal energy would bring them back.
He has no faith whatever in the City of London bankers though to
deliver loans needed to foster talent.
