Detention orders for six extended again

KUALA LUMPUR: Nik Adli Nik Abdul Aziz, the son of Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, is among six people who have their detention orders extended for two more years under the Internal Security Act.

Another is 49-year-old Zainon Ismail, said a senior police officer.

The other four are believed to be Md Lotfi Ariffin, Ahmad Pozi Darman, Alias Ngah and Solehan Abdul Ghafar.

This is the second extension order for the six, who were detained in 2001 for their involvement in KMM, which was said to have attempted to topple the Government by force.

After having their detention order extended for two years in 2003, the six men, who were supposed to be released last Friday, were further detained for another two years as the authorities found them still unrepentant.

It is learnt that the detainees' family members had gathered outside the Kamunting detention centre hoping for their release.

Zainon, who allegedly founded KMM in 1995, was reportedly a mujahideen fighter during Afghanistan's war against the Soviet-backed government.

He is also a former committee member of a PAS branch in Kedah.

Nik Adli, a 38-year-old former religious teacher, was accused of being an elected KMM leader in 1999.  //Thestar 28 Sept
