I agree with you that this is an installation problem, but I doubt that it is caused
by Solaris in general. Your first message (quoted by Joshua) showed me that you are
using perl 5.00503 under Solaris. I couldn't recognize which Solaris it is, so I tried
Sparc Solaris 5.4, 5.5.1, 5.6, 5.7 and 5.8 with
perl 5.00503, Event 0.81 and the first example, copied from your mail. All these tests
succeeded.
Do you run Sparc Solaris as well (or Solaris on Intel)? Please describe your
installation in detail. Which way did you build perl ("perl -V")? Possibly we can
figure out more looking at these informations.
