Hi,
This group hasn't been too active of late, so I
hope you are all still around.
I am thinking of offering an Advanced perl class
through North Harris College - Geoscience Technology
Training Center (NHC-GTTC) (where I teach my
current perl class.)
NHC-GTTC class formats are basically three weeks,
two nights a week, four hours a night for a total
of 24 class hours. I have a lab with Sun kit,
a 450 and six Ultra2's, running Solaris 2.6.
GTTC being a center for scientists and technical
people supporting petroleum science, I have thus
far left CGI and that sort of thing to other venues.
I am thinking that I would have a format something
like:
Week 1
Day 1 Review of basic perl
Day 2 pointers, hash of hash, sockets
Week 2
Day 1 Using perl with Oracle - basic SQL, etc.
Day 2 Using perl with Oracle - DBM, DBI, etc.
Week 3
Day 1 Algorithms - part 1
Day 2 Algorithms - part 2
I would like to squeeze in TK, but I'm not sure there
is room. The Oracle part would focus on the OpenWorks
/ Oracle database, commonly used in petroleum scientific
computing.
For texts, I am thinking of using
Week 1
Srinivasan - Advanced Perl Programing
Week 2
???
Week 3
Orwant et al, Mastering Algorithms with Perl.
This would add up to a lot of money for texts, but
most of my students have employers who will pay for them.
I would appreciate any advice, comments, suggestions,
scraps of outlines, encouragement, whatever, that
anyone could provide.
Thanks,
Will
