The lanman module can do the job for you. It's available from CPAN.

If you prefer to use ADSI, you'd have a look to the book "ADSI Scripting for
System Administration" from Thomas Eck. The examples are in VB, but it's
easy to translate to perl.

at the moment, i run a scheduled task on the server 
net file > text
and process it remotely.

any suggestions? i know that there is a service from www.sysinternals.com
that lists file handles, but i would prefer a simple API call as its running
on a server.

i didnt find anything on cpan unfortunately, looking for file handle is a
little like looking for water in the ocean....
