Thanks to all who gave me suggestions on using Perl to automatically unzip files. I've been away from work so didn't respond more quickly. I used the suggestion of system call to command line extension to winzip. e.g. "wzunzip -o $file", since that was the quickest. But I will look into the various modules that were recommended here.
