http://rsync.samba.org has some good stuff for this. I have shelled out to it with perl in the past. One caveat, however: on NT4 it relies upon a cygwin dll (a unix api for win32). Cygwin file i/o is based upon 32 bit code, and therefore fails when the 2GB limit is passed. Other than that, it's a champ (also, this is only an issue on NT).
