Thanks for your advice.

I think I've got it sorted now, it was my error - I was testing my program by
executing a net use command to connect to the remote machine and then running
the perl registry query script I had written.  I assumed that because I was
already authenticated that would be it, however the script kept failing.

After a couple more frustrated hours I sent the e-mail to the list.  Another
hour later I played out a hunch - By using Win32::NetResource::AddConnection in
the script to map the drive and then running the registry query it all worked
fine!

For some reason even though I was authenticated before I ran the script, the
permissions werent passed through to the script I ran.  By making the
authentication occur within the script (which I would have had to do eventually
anyway - Doh!) it worked perfectly.

A big thanks for your help though - its great to see such an active community.
