I write less robust code. I know it sounds stupid and flippant, but the truth of the matter is that without being able to alarm something then your code is necessarily less robust. I wouldn't use Perl on Win32 for mission critical things where alarming was really required. NB: I'm not saying that there are no workarounds - just that I don't know any reliable ones and hence have adopted the above attitude.
