I'd provide some examples, but the US military forbids me from exporting
their code I have written for them in Perl.  But suffice it to say that the
code does work across LANs, WANs and the Internet to keep the military in
business.

I really don't think the military would consider these programs 'toys'.

Let's see, applications written in Perl which run under Windows that are
not just "toys"... Well, a lot of my work is web-related, so I'll point
you to:

WebCT (course management system) at www.webct.com I do not know if a
demo to run on your machine is available

Discus (discussion board) at www.discus.com You can get a free copy of
this

Calcium (web calendar) at www.brownbearsoftware.com Free copy available

I don't consider anything running in the multiple-hundreds-K "toys," so
these are three you might want to look at.

None of these are compiled (stand-alone) programs, I interpret your
question to mean you want to try to compile them.
