If anyone starts getting page faults while running Perl (mine is Build 633 
but I assume that matters little as this is actually a Windows problem) 
check the date on C:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll. There is a new version 
that's bad. Have you installed anything lately:)

I wish I could tell you I got the date off the bad version before I deleted 
it, but at that point I was desperately trying to get up again, and I just 
nailed it without a second thought.

There is an old version in C:\windows\windows update setup 
files\MDAC_IE5.CAB dated 3/8/99 that works. Of course the original is in 
use by Windows -- have to reboot to DOS to change it.

The first thing I did when Perl started acting up was try a virus scan. It 
also takes out McAfee security center (and who knows what else), which at 
first made me think it must certainly be a nasty little virus that was 
attacking my anti-virus defenses first, but no, that's the wrong way to 
look for the solution to this one.
