IF memory serves, which is more questionable every day, the ZIP format uses
an unsigned 16-bit number for the count of files.  (ie. 64K files or so.)

Sorry... I haven't looked at the details of other formats.  I would hope
that if you made a TAR and compressed it, it would handle it.  Good luck...
