Use Net::DNS to find the MX records for the domain (everything after the @
sign). If there are none, find the A records. There's an example for finding
all the MX records with preferences in the Net::DNS documentation. Try the
mail exchanger with the lowest preference first. (That'll not necessarily be
the first one in the result array.)

Use DNS.
But why don't you talk to a local SMTP server (such as your ISP's) which
will do all this for you? mail.yourcompany.de, for example? Or
mail.yourisp.net? That would be so much easier, I think.
