Hi,

I have this personal project.. I'd like to develop a photo gallery and
have the content (blurbs, pics, whatever) derived from a database. This is
all simple and a no brainer.. now here is my question.. Does any one have
a better way to manage the image files?

Currently what I do is I have a field in a table that stored the relative
path to the image on the web server. Using DBI I can print that out what I
need on the html and the pic shows up on the web page. All is good.

Problem.. say you get to the point of having 10K+ images? now managing the
pics dir and making sure the paths actually reference a file is a full time
job on it's own.

Ok, another way is to store the image file as a varbinary and then DBI your
way though things.. I'm not too keen on this latter method.. I feel RTFM
comming on but that's ok...

Can anyone give me some pointers, advice, flames, insults? Even better has
someone tried this varbinary stuff with perl? I don't want to use C, C++
and stuff.. If perl won't do it then now, I'll wait for the next version :c)

FYI, the tech details are:
Linux, apache 1.3.12
perl 5.6
PHP 4.00
dbi 1.14 (i think.. haven't checked in a while)
MSSQL7 on NT4 is the database

Hope this is not OT, and thanks for your time!

Regards,

Gonzalo
