Is it possible that the column isn't big enough to hold the record? Because of the limitations of the leader a MARC21 record cannot exceed 99999 bytes in length. I also don't know if varchar columns are able to store non-printable characters that are found in an encoded MARC record.

The BLOB idea sounds like a good idea to try.
