Merge branch 'Document back-compats' into blead
This is a series of tiny commits, each of which creates fairly minimal
documentation for elements that are retained only for backwards
compatibility.
Some of these are automatically generated for the ones I knew nothing
about and the intent wasn't immediately obvious. The automatic boiler
plate for these basically says, don't add them to new code, and if you
know how they're supposed to work, patches welcome. This provides a
modicum of information, good enough for most modern usage, and doesn't
require us to dig into how things used to work but don't now.
