I downloaded Perl-5.8.7 and read the README.macosx file. It basically
tells why version 5.8.1 is the recommended version, and how it is
entangled with /System/Library, etc. But that was back in 1983.

I had at one point built Perl-5.8.7 and passed all tests. I felt maybe
I needed the more recent version, because I got some "make check"
failures referring to Perl in other packages (gnu/gettext, if I recall
correctly).

For now I will leave 5.8.1 in there, but since I am running Mac OSX
3.9, should I have a newer version? And are the generic installation
instructions dangerous for the Mac?

please advise
