Thanks Mike, those changes do indeed help. Current numbers on my system for 5000 generations of life with various versions of Parrot (using CVS tags) are: 0.0.5 47.99 generations per second 0.0.6 57.41 0.0.7 20.18 current 21.18 (an improvement of 4.7% over 0.0.7) I suspect my system (166MHz Pentium, linux 2.2.18) may be below the target threshold.
