while typing
  perl Configure.pl --nomanicheck ---verbose-step=init::gcc --configure_trace

earlier today in order to debug a configure-related problem i was
having, i felt --configure_trace was too much to type.

i'd like to see --trace instead, if it makes sense and doesn't overlap
with an existing option. this is just a general feeling, so i'll leave
the analysis and decision making to somebody more familiar with the
code.

 heck, i think --nomanicheck is too much to type, too, and shortcuts
like -t and -m (or -!m) would be easier on the fingertips--but that's
best submitted in a separate ticket, possibly after some more thought.
feel free to go ahead and think for me, if it crosses your mind.
