This ticket has been very low priority on my to-do list for exactly
this reason. I'm not sure it's going to help code readability
(although I could probably squeeze some more efficiency out of it by
reducing the number of realloc calls). I also don't want to be
squeezing too many changes into IMCC that don't have a major benefit
when we're planning to replace IMCC wholesale. If other people say we
should reject this, I certainly won't complain.
