I'm seeing the same behavior.   This code runs in a script, but if you
paste one line at a time into the repl it blows up.  Clearly a repl
bug, worth reporting I'd say:

    my $string   = 'Is this a regex or a string. ';
    my $regex    = /\w+/;
    say $string.match: / $regex /;                        #  ｢Is｣
