Hi all,

you are invited to join a new mailing list / forum I set up titled "geeks-IL":

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/geeks-il

What are geeks? Geeks, also known as "amateurs" (= people who love what they do
and a word which used to be a compliment - see
http://paulgraham.com/opensource.html ) or "hackers" (= people who bend the
rules, and don't accept their fate and use this to try to earn their victory -
see http://paulgraham.com/gba.html and
http://www.shlomifish.org/philosophy/philosophy/putting-all-cards-on-the-table-2013/#david_and_goliath
), are people who like what they do and furthermore are interested in more than
just their particular field or fields of expertise. There are geeks of anything
from cooking and knitting (and even from shopping) to air&space engineering.

Furthermore, geeks also come in all shapes and sizes: men, women, boys, girls,
young, old, of almost all religions and beliefs, and of all races and
origins, technical inclanations, appearances, character, etc. See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Fish_Two_Fish_Red_Fish_Blue_Fish .

The forum's main language will be English (either U.S., Commonwealth or
any other will be fine) but any other human or programming language will be
accepted. We are focused on people who live in Israel, or are associated with
it, but any person can join it as long as they try to be civil and friendly
and if not - try to improve.

I'll admit that I'm not sure if Geeks-IL will be very successful, but the
worst way for it to fail would be to not try. Hackers-IL was successful even
though it is now mostly inactive because it had many posts and provided a lot of
inspiration and insights for the people who took an active part in discussing
the topics there. Most good things never last forever anyway.

Another note: linking to and soliciting feedback for digital works that you have
produced is not only tolerated, but encouraged - as long as they are not or not
entirely behind a paywall. Linking to works that you experienced recently and
have inspired you is certainly encouraged, as long as you provide some study
(= "Midrash") of what they mean to you.

====

Some of the things that make geeks unique and successful are:

1. They love the things they do. While a geek may do things he or she doesn't
like doing - because they need to be done - they spend a lot of time doing
things they love.

2. They bend the rules, and often improvise or do things differently.

3. They accept the fact that some of the results they will produce won't be
perfect or even acceptable to most people, but they accept them as natural
lowpoints, and learn from their mistakes and become better in the future.

4. They never give up completely - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxGRhd_iWuE .

5. They know they lead an exciting and interesting life, even if other people
find faults in a lot of the cool stuff they do.

========================

Some of the things that are discourages in the mailing list are disturbing
depiction of violence and pornography (some sex/love/romance talk and talk about
action/fighting/etc. is fine); spamming, professional trolling, hate
E-mail and being a
http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/258206/what-is-a-help-vampire ; maybe
some other rules as we come with them, but our rules are just guidelines, not
gospel, and people are expected to apply some amount of reason.

Happy geekery! And feel free to forward this message (which is under
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ ) to other mailing lists or forums.

Best regards,

        Shlomi Fish
